Abstract

This research investigates how male and female gender roles are portrayed in a seventh-grade Indonesian language textbook used in junior high schools. The study focuses on the depiction of gender roles through both narrative and visual elements, and whether traditional gender norms are implicitly reinforced. A qualitative research approach is applied, utilising content analysis as the method. Data are obtained from textbook documentation and examined using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis framework, allowing for in-depth evaluation of text and imagery related to gender representation. The study’s findings reveal an unequal portrayal, where male figures are predominantly associated with active, public domains, whereas female figures are more often linked to passive or domestic roles. These patterns highlight the persistence of stereotypical gender constructs within educational content. It is concluded that while textbooks are intended to serve as neutral instructional tools, they may unintentionally perpetuate gender bias. Therefore, critical reflection and revision are necessary to promote a more inclusive and gender-sensitive learning atmosphere
